POMPEY ROYAL

BEER

This beer has become a local institution and the recipe has been handed down from brewery to brewery for decades.

Availability - Awakening, St John's church, Gosport - 10 & 11 May.

HISTORY

  • First brewed by Portsmouth and Brighton United Breweries in late October 1948.

  • P & B U acquired by Brickwood & Co. in 1953 and, in 1962, brewing transferred to their brewery in Admiralty Road.

  • In 1971 Whitbread acquired Brickwood & Co. and this beer was renamed Brickwood's Best.  In 1977, however, it reverted to its' original name.

  • Brewing ceased in Portsmouth in Autumn 1983 and the brewing of this beer was transferred to the Whitbread Flowers brewery, Cheltenham, Gloucestershire.

  • In the late 1980s the brewing of this beer was moved to Whitbread's Fremlin Brewery, Faversham, Kent.

  • Throughout the mid-to-late 1990s this beer was contract-brewed for Whitbread by George Gale & Co. Ltd., Horndean.

  • This beer was resurrected in 2008 by Gosport's Oakleaf Brewery and continued to be brewed by Fallen Acorn Brewing. Following the demise of Oakleaf.

  • Following the sad closure of Fallen Acorn Brewing the recipe was kindly shared with Newtown Brewery
